In January 2013, I was participating in my normal hot yoga routine, when a little adjustment of my fitness attire caused me to feel a very obvious lump in my left breast. I knew something was wrong and as soon as I was home, I was on the phone making a doctors appointment.
The beginning of 2013 marked a time that I will never forget, as I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer and the BRCA 1 gene.
My year consisted of a lumpectomy on my left breast, chemotherapy, double mastectomy with reconstruction and detailed planning for my future. With a team of outstanding doctors by my side, I took every preventative measure necessary to remove this cancer and stop it from ever coming back. Being a feisty 29 year old, I guess I would say the most memorable parts of my year have been being bald and getting new boobs.
Every day I am thankful for the people who supported me through these growing pains, my family and friends were unbelievably selfless and their positivity was contagious. I kept laughing, dancing and smiling throughout the process, even when it seemed impossible.
Today, I feel like a rockstar that kicked cancer’s butt. I am back practicing yoga, teaching dance, traveling and enjoying every second with energy and a new appreciation for life!
